2nd Mike Nosco Memorial Ride...

to Benefit Andreas Knickman. Many of you may recognize the last name. For those of you who do not, Roy Knickman was one of America's top racing cyclists in the 1980s and 90s, racing with teams such as 7-11, Coors Light and Mercury, among others. From what I can gather Andreas is Roy's son and has been battling cancer since April 2009. An auction and benefit ride along the coast and Thousand Oaks areas are planned, though final details are still being worked out. If you are on Facebook, this link is to the Memorial Ride Facebook page, and it provides an additional link to the Mike Nosco website with further link for Andreas Knickman. Andreas is a young kid who gets support from his family; they in turn could use some from our cycling community. Photos below are from the Mike Nosco website.

You may find updates here from time to time as I have time to find out more information. The Conejo Valley Cyclists have a blurb on this event at their website as well. About the organizer: Mike Nosco is the brother of ride and auction organizer Jack, who was killed after being hit by a car while on a ride. This annual memorial ride is Jack's way to commemorate his brother's life. Andreas is the son of Roy and Debbie Knickman. The first annual Memorial Ride, held last year, also benefited Andreas Knickman; a recent relapse in his recovery convinced Mr. Nosco to again dedicate the ride to Andreas for this second year.

The Conejo Valley Guide has a story here.

Well, it is now Wednesday morning at 9:30, and I am sitting in my cubicle having, obviously, not made the ride. A pat on the back to everyone who did. A key component of "community" is an active group of people who support one another. If anyone needed evidence of the existence of a "cycling community" in Southern California, they need look no further than events like this. I will continue to post links as I find them.

Update (early Thursday): no links yet, but early report estimates that upwards of 275 people made it out to show that they care and support the Knickman family.

Dave Zabriskie has posted up a little recap which you can read here.
Road Bike Action also has a nice write-up with photos which you can read here.
Road magazines coverage is here. Again, some terrific photos.
