Apparently I missed this when it originally was printed on the Bicycling webpage on the first of the month. Luckily with today's streaming media, posts circulate, popping up place to place, and after seeing a link on TreeHugger, I got to check it out directly at Bob Mionski's site:

Big Oil—which spends millions of dollars on lobbying and campaign contributions every year, but reaps billions of dollars in record profits—is afraid. Very afraid. It’s kind of funny when you think about it—the oil industry, which is enjoying the largest profits in human history, is afraid of a child on a bike. So afraid, that Representatives in Washington who are beholden to Big Oil will do whatever they can to make it less safe for children to get to school. 

Opponents of active transportation, and those who fear change to their status quo, are ever active in pushing for their cause. Those of us seeking a more healthy, equitable way must be just as active, and even more vigilant. There are any number of active transportation rights groups through which we can voice our concerns; or go the direct route and let your own congressman know what is important to you and your family. After all, misdirected policies that are enacted now, will have negative repercussions for years to come.
