Men's 45+ race: Fast, you betcha. Consider who was in it, Steve Hegg, former Olympic Gold Medalist, Thurlow Rogers, former Master's World Champion, Richard Meeker, former National Champion. And they are my competition. Thats all.

This young woman won the women's Pro/1/2 race; pretty good right? Then you watch as she does a roll-out for the official, and you realize she is still a junior. Now you're impressed.

Fun to go to races after some number of years and see people from long ago. Ray Moreno and I were both with the Chevy/Sheriff club in the early 90s.

From the archives: Adams and Hegg at Long Beach, 1992...

Kenny Adams of the Spago-Rossin team in front of Chevrolet-LA Sheriff's Steve Hegg during the old Long Beach Criterium series, race #4, I believe in 1992. The Spago team, with various co-sponsors was a major player on the domestic cycling scene in the early 1990s with some high profile riders including Scott McKinley, Andy Bishop, James Urbonas, the Swiss rider Herbert Neiderberger, Nathan Dahlberg, Italian Stefano Bianchini, and Bobby Julich, as well as Adams. They had some quality results, but like most of the domestic teams of the time were often competing in the tailwind of the powerhouse Coors Light team.

Update: it was the 5 of July, 1992 to be exact. Hegg, Adams and Brian Seguin also of the Chevrolet-LA Sheriff team lapped the field, Hegg took the win, Adams finished second.

One of the things I liked about racing with a club that had an associated pro team, was that you had the opportunity to get stuff; not last year's bike kind of stuff, unfortunately. More like these trading cards kind of stuff, small stuff. The Chevrolet/ LA Sheriff team was one of the top squads in North America in 1994 and included Tour de France stage victors and an Olympic gold medalist. Racing for the team that year were Jeff Pierce, Steve Hegg, Bobby Julich, Malcolm Elliott, Thomas Craven, Dave McCook and Jamie Paolinetti.
