Wouter Weylandt (1984-2011)

Our thoughts should be with the Belgian racer, his family, friends and teammates today. Horrible, solo crash during the Giro today did not look good. I had just turned on the television, for the days coverage, when they were showing medical responders cutting the straps to remove his helmet, as Weylandt lay motionless. Unfortunately that will be my lasting image of this young man. Whatever happens during the remaining three weeks of this Giro, it will be sadly overshadowed.

Wouter Weylandt's short professional career included a stage win in both the Vuelta a Espana and, just last year, in the Giro d'Italia, a third place finish in the Spring classic, Ghent-Wevelgem (2008), among others. Those of us who have raced at even the lowest level of the sport, but have experienced the camaraderie and spirit of the peloton, are diminished by the loss.
