El Roble student injured...
Today, after school, an El Roble Intermediate School student was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Mountain and Santa Clara near Mountain View Elementary School (the two schools are a quarter mile apart on the same street). I have not heard any specifics about what occurred, but the student, who was attended by paramedics and transported to local hospital for observation is apparently okay. Mountain Avenue does have a bike lane, and is a primary route for students riding to El Roble. With two school campuses located along this short section of Mountain, there are many students coming and going on their own and many parents driving to one school or the other. It seems obvious to say that extra care and attention needs to be taken along here, especially during the morning and afternoon hours. Too often I see drivers exceeding the 25 mph school speed limit and encroaching into the marked bike lane. This is irresponsible for anyone, but all the more so for a parent. With so many students walking and riding along those local streets, talking with friends and maybe not focused on their surroundings, it becomes all the more imperative that drivers give extra attention to their own driving, as well as to what is happening right next to them and just up the street. No matter where the fault lies, it is the motor vehicle that will be inflicting any damage in a collision with a pedestrian or rider, and the onus rests with the drivers on these streets to ensure the safety of all.
